Overview

The Endangered Languages Research Cluster (ELRC) under the English Discipline at Khulna University, Bangladesh, is a scholarly, academic, and transdisciplinary research initiative and platform dedicated to the documentation, preservation, and revitalization of endangered, under-documented, and minority languages across Bangladesh and beyond. As Bangladesh’s rich and diverse linguistic landscape faces increasing threats from globalization, migration, cultural assimilation, and shifts in sociocultural and political dynamics, resulting in the risk of endangerment, extinction, and disappearance of many tribal and regional minority languages at an alarming rate, ELRC serves as a hub that brings together expertise from linguistics, anthropology, sociology, history, digital humanities, as well as speech community members and policy-makers to respond to this challenge through scholarly study, transdisciplinary research, collaboration, community engagement, academic innovation, and advocacy for preservation of linguistic diversity and cultural heritage.

ELRC engages in field-linguistic documentation and corpus development activities of endangered and minority languages, digital archiving and database creation, sociolinguistic and ethnolinguistic research, technology-driven initiatives, organization of workshops, seminars, and training programs, policy engagement, community participation, scholarly collaboration, and educational outreach, recognizing ethnolinguistic diversity as a cornerstone of Bangladesh’s cultural heritage.
